There is a special designation given to Texas agricultural farms or ranches that have remained in continuous operation under the same family for a specific number of years. Learn more about the TX Department of Agriculture program that recognizes these families for the vital role their land operations play in our TX heritage and economy.

If you or your family have owned a piece of agriculture land in Texas for over 100 years, do you know that you can apply for a certificate through the Family Land Heritage program. Also called FLH, this program was developed in 1974 through the Texas Department of Agriculture and it recognized families that have maintained agriculture operations throughout Texas for over a hundred years.

Every year in the fall at the state capitol here in Austin, these families will gather and over 5,000 ranches throughout Texas are recognized with the FLH program. So, you can apply for free and, unfortunately, there are no tax benefits or protections to be a part of this program, but you will be listed in an annual registry and it’s really neat because agriculture is obviously such a big part of Texas’ history from cattle to cotton to corn. It’s a huge part of our history. So, it’s really neat to be recognized in this program. Again, this is through the Texas Department of Agriculture where you can find additional resources on this program.

You get a certificate and, as mentioned, you get listed in an annual registry. There are certificates for either 100 years, 150 years or 200 years. Again, unfortunately, there are no tax benefits like agriculture exemption. But, obviously, if you’re running an agricultural property, you probably have AG exemption already. But, this is a neat program. This is something new that we just learned about even though it’s been around for nearly 50 years, so might be something worth looking into.
