From meeting with an accredited water well driller and filing all paperwork to a water filtration system, possible need for a storage tank and overall cost – here’s a quick dive into drilling a water well on your property.
Throughout many parts of Texas, landowners don’t always have access to a co-op or city water line. Therefore, they will need to drill a water well and drilling a water well in Texas is actually quite easy if it’s going to be used for domestic or livestock purposes. But, there are a few things that you need to know.
First off, we always recommend that you meet with an experienced water well driller to ensure that there is groundwater in the area.
Secondly, as long as the well is not producing more than 25,000 gallons per day and it’s used for livestock or domestic purposes, you won’t have to apply for an operating permit with the TCEQ, also known as the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. All you’ll need to do is file a drilling log and completion report and register the well. Generally speaking, the well driller should file all of these documents. So, we recommend not submitting final payment to the well driller until they have completed all those documents and submitted those.
A couple things to note with a water well. First off, we always recommend a water filter at the house before the water enters the plumbing system of the house. There could be high salinity content. There could be high contents of minerals in the water, such as iron, for example. So, we always recommend a really good filtration system.
Secondly, you want to ensure that the water well is producing at least 10 gallons per minute for a single family home. If the water well isn’t producing 10 gallons per minute, you’ll probably need a storage tank. We recommend anywhere from a 2,000 to 5,000 gallon storage tank.
Generally speaking, costs for water wells are going to range from $10,000-$20,000 depending on the depth and the size of the piping used.
