This year, our Land Sale TX team wanted to ensure we spent more time volunteering in Caldwell county. One on occasion, after arriving for our scheduled service time at Lockhart nonprofit, we were informed that they, unfortunately, had an emergency situation and had to close for the day. Our team was standing by and ready and willing to help someone, so we headed over to a local coffee shop, Chaparral Coffee, and made some calls to one of our contacts in the area to ask if she knew of anyone that could use some helping hands at that exact moment. She called back several minutes later and informed us that the Golden Age Home told her to tell us to “come on down and they’d put us to work.” Golden Age Home Assisted Living is one of the few non-profit nursing homes in the country and has been serving Lockhart since 1960 – gaining its non-profit status back in 1964.
We had no idea how we’d assist, but after a brief intro, we were handed mop buckets, brooms, rags and more and we’re given the opportunity to serve the residents, staff and guests by cleaning their sunroom – a space loved and enjoyed by residents especially when they have visitors. But, it was in need of a true deep cleaning & reorg.
The incredible energy of the residents and staff touched us from the moment we stepped foot into their facilities and walked their hallways. After we finished cleaning, we spoke with Nicole Burnett, the Executive Director, for a few extra minutes. Greatly moved by Golden Age Home and the many services and activities the staff and community works hard to provide to their residents, we knew we wanted to do more for this fantastic community. We got to thinking about how we would love to bring in some of what we love about the local Lockhart community inside the Golden Age Home doors for all the residents to experience.
So, inspired by Lockhart’s friendly smiles, infamous Bar-B-Que, and local country music, we hosted a “Two-Steppin’ Tuesday” event with live country music and dancing provided by local Lockhart resident, Jenn Miori Hughes. And, we served BBQ from Chisholm Trail BBQ, adorned the resident activity room with western décor, and had a photo booth with pictures provided by Andrew Gamble of Ladybug Events & Designs. Coincidently, we were able to plan this event to fall during National Assisted Living Week.
Serving Golden Age Home’s residents was one of the highlights of our year. The opportunity to personally serve each resident allowed us to meet and engage with some true treasures. One of the residents, Gladys, shared with us that she was from Oklahoma, a hard-core Toby Keith fan and raised in a family full of musicians. She said that the event was a wonderful reminder of all the country music festivals she attended in her home state. We also met Ms. Snyder, who knew the words and joyfully sang along to every song. She told us about her husband. Mr. Reeves, who loved the music so much that he couldn’t help but dance along. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Ms. Mary reminisced with another resident about his time singing with southern gospel groups.
We hope the Golden Age Home felt even a smidge of the same excitement, joy and energy that we experienced while planning and executing this event for them. Golden Age Home is an incredible community, and we look forward to our next visit and the opportunity to serve them again.
