If you own or are considering purchasing a property that is or was once home to oil drilling or is close to other properties with oil, gas or mining production, you’ll need to take precaution to ensure your safety where H2S gas may be present.
H2S gas or hydrogen sulfide, more commonly known as sewer gas or swamp gas, is known for its rotten egg smell. This is typically found in areas of oil production, sewers and maybe mining facilities. It’s more common in Caldwell county locally because of the high level of oil production in the county. It’s something to be aware of because at higher concentrations it’s going to be highly toxic and flammable. At lower concentrations, it’s not as much of a threat, but it can still cause irritation to your eyes, coughing. But, at higher concentrations, it can be deadly. Also, it can affect your breathing patterns because it is a chemical asphyxiant.
Now, this is more common around higher production levels of oil and large oil refineries. The reason we mentioned this is because, throughout the state of Texas, there are many properties that be affected by the H2S gas due to the oil production on them. While as mentioned, at lower levels it’s not as much of a threat as it could be at higher production levels, it’s just something to be aware of when you’re using properties that have any kind of oil and gas production on them. Like a canary in the coal mine, it’s much recommended that you use an H2S monitor while working on properties that have higher production levels of oil and gas.
