Did you know that your appraisal district can ask you to reapply for your ag exemption at any point? It’s not necessarily every 5-10 years. How do you know if you’re required to reapply this year and when you have to apply as a new property owner.

Your current appraisal district can require you to refile your ag exemption at any point in time. More commonly, however, if you’re a new owner you’re going to be required to file at January 1st of the following year. If you purchase your property in the middle of the year, you’re not required to refile your ag exemption right away. This is typically done at the beginning of the next year.

Your county appraisal district will mail you an application to all the new owners and also whoever they decide to have refile. The frequency of refiling is typically determined by the county appraisal district. Each county can vary from either 5 years to 10 years to however their liking is. It’s very important that you get your application filed by the deadline of April 30th. If not, this may result in you paying full market value taxes for that current year. You may have an opportunity to refile for the next year again. This is very important for new property owners and also if the appraisal district requires you to refile.
