Chiggers! Tips and tricks to avoid and get relief from these microscopic but mighty creatures.

If you’ve ever spent a good amount of time in Texas, you’ve probably heard of chiggers. Chigger refers to the parasitic level of mites. More like spiders than insects, they are part of the Arachnida family with scorpions and ticks. Now, there are several types of chiggers in Texas, but only two that you really need to worry about. And, if you’ve ever been bitten by chiggers, you know the itching that ensues is absolutely maddening. Crazy enough, you actually don’t even feel it when they bite you, unlike fire ants or mosquitoes that definitely let you know when they are present. Chiggers are most active in the late spring to early fall and most commonly found in brushy or wooded or grassy areas. So, in other words, rural land in Texas.

The best way to avoid chiggers is to wear loose fitting, tightly woven clothing. I definitely recommend wearing long sleeves, pants – you can either tuck your pants into your boots or what I do is I will actually put my pants on the outside of my boots and duct tape them or use masking tape so the chiggers can’t actually crawl up underneath your pants and bite you. After you’ve been exposed to an area where you think chiggers are present, it’s best to remove your clothing immediately as chiggers will actually explore their hosts for several hours before they bite. The most common areas that they bite is where clothing is most tight fitting and it’s thin skin, such as around your hips, your groin area, around your ankles, behind your knees, etc.

Some other tips to avoid chiggers: Dust ankles with sulphur powder and/or use insect repellent with deet or picaridin

If you’ve been bitten by chiggers, the best remedy is to go home and immediately take a warm shower and scrub yourself very well with a soapy brush or a soapy washcloth. Also, you can take antihistamines such as Benadryl or use an anti-itch ointment cream or hydrocortisone, for example. We are not medical professionals. Please consult your doctor/medical professional for treatment.Β

A couple myths with chiggers is that people believe that they actually burrow into your skin or suck your blood. Neither of these are true. So, they’re not that extreme.
